There is nothing in this society that lies beyond the discussion of cinema. Each film maker got his own style of discussing social issues. “Puri Jagannath” who has a peculiar style of discussing social issues in his films came up with “ISM” starring Nandamuri Kalyan Ram, Aditi Arya in lead roles. This film is produced by Kalyan Ram under his “NTR Arts” production house.
Kalyan Ram (Kalyan Ram) who loves Alia Khan (Aditi), the daughter of the most wanted mafia don Javed Ibrahim (Jagapathi Babu) suddenly escapes from them. What is the reason behind this and what is the motto of Kalyan Ram form the rest plot.
Everyone has got his own style of narrating a story but Puri opines that an audience gets bored once the plot point is being narrated. That is why he doesn’t open the actual plot point until the film completes half of its run time. He manages his film with the characterisations, humour, action sequences and songs. An audience has to watch the film just for Puri’s trademark dialogues else it feels so artificial sometimes. The same happened with the love thread of lead actors in this film. At a point, it reminded of the maker’s “Heart Attack”. As he decided not to go to the actual plot until an hour, songs and some forced sequences failed to entertain. Meanwhile, “Kareem Beedi” got an enough publicity.
As the plot unveils with the second half, Puri dominated as writer rather than as director. The scene where Gollapudi Maruti Rao appears had its impact because of meaningful dialogues. Inspired by Wiki Leaks founder “Julian Assange” and “V for Vendetta”, Puri tried to explain the effect of JOURNALISM on society yet it was ineffective except in a few moments. As we can see the lead actor with handcuffs in the posters, one can expect a scene in court in this film. Remembering the court scene of maker’s “Temper” film, an audience awaits such high voltage scene due to which song like “Ela Ela” couldn’t acquire a recognition. The much awaited court sequence failed to impress much due to ineffective background score. Unlike actor’s performance, dialogues and background score of Temper court sequence, this film has just actor’s performance and dialogues that helped the court sequence. After that, the film ended on a regular commercial note.
On a whole, “ISM” tries to prove the power of journalism which is a kind of patriotism but the effort ended being ineffective.
Kalyan Ram attracted with his new style of appearance and performance for which Puri should be appreciated. This film shows a strong makeover of the artist. Aditi Arya is just a Puri branded heroine. Jagapathi Babu failed to impress. Rest like Ali, Vennela Kishore, Posani, Jayaprakash Reddy, Eeswari Rao are usual. Tanikella Bharani and Gollapudi who had a limited screen presence had an enough impact on the film.
- Puri’s dialogues. Puri tried to use his powerful weapon to a greater extent in this film. Dialogues on the lives of farmers are thought provoking.
- Kalyan Ram. As said, he is one of the main reasons to watch this film.
- Mukesh’s Cinematography. All the visuals are colourful and rich.
- Production Values. Kalyan Ram turned no stone down in making the film appear rich.
- Narration. As the main plot point has limited scope, narration failed to inject it strongly into audience’s mind.
- Background score. For films that discuss social issues, background score should be effective, which is missing in this film.
